Thursday 10th September marks World Suicide Prevention Day, STS seek to communicate one clear message this year, and encourage everyone to Take a Minute and Reach Out to someone in your community, it could Change a Life. Staff across the company are recognising the day by participating in a series of workshops that focus on four key areas:
- Understanding the impact of suicide and its prevalence in the construction industry
- Removing the stigma and know the signs
- Empowering individuals to reach out to someone
- Sharing relevant supports and tools that are available
Death by suicide is a frequent occurrence worldwide and accounts for over 800,000 deaths every year. In Ireland 10 people die every week from suicide, 8 of these deaths are men. The prevalence of suicide is ever present in construction, deaths in the industry from suicide are around 10 times higher than deaths from injury and the risk of suicide among low-skilled construction workers is three times the national average.
There are a number of supports and tools that are available to people and we are delighted to be celebrating the launch of the Construction Industry Helpline and Wellbeing App. The CIF, in partnership with the Lighthouse Club, launched the interactive mobile app which is available now to download for free on Android and IOS and offers a range of supports and advice from occupation health and mental wellbeing to emergency financial aid. We are encouraging everyone working in the construction industry to download the app.
