What is it like to work with STS Group?
STS Group offers numerous jobs for experienced professionals as well as for employees who have not completed their training. STS are happy to welcome returnees and lateral entrants who want to find their way back into the profession or try something new. Here you will find out more about what it is like to become part of STS Group team.
I initially began working with STS as an Electrician in 2016 where I was posted to the Data Centre’s in Dublin. I received a really warm welcome and immediately began developing good relationships with all my colleagues on site.
I was working on my tools until 2018 when STS saw potential in me and sent me on an Electrical Testing and Verification course with Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board. From this I gained not only my qualification but I also built confidence in my abilities on the job.
Having continuously developed and putting my learnings into practice, I was promoted to Authorised Person (AP), soon after finishing my course. Within this role, I was given a lot more responsibility, having to take control of a full Lockout Tagout system. I was in control of overseeing the permit system of full electrical works and knew that I needed to be effective in my role to ensure that the site could operate as needed. I’m grateful that STS knew they could depend on me to take on that responsibility.
In 2023 STS sent me over to Stoke, UK, to further my education through a Low Voltage Authorised Person Course and a High Voltage Authorised Person Course. Following this I was then given the opportunity to move in to the role of Senior AP under the STS Group.
I am nearly 8 years with STS and I really enjoy working with the company. STS has clear career paths for employees when you put the hard work in and that is something that is really important to me. The company also aligns really well with family values and have also supported me in my personal life when I have needed it. I look forward to what the future holds with STS.
I returned to education on a part-time basis in 2016. I studied Business in WIT and completed my BBS in 2020 with First Class Honours. I had my first child during my third year of study and was determined to complete my degree as originally planned. My support at home was key to that.
I started with STS in January 2022 in an administrative role in the Commercial Department. This involved supporting the Quantity Surveyors with administrative duties and contract controls. While working with the commercial team, I became more familiar with the duties of the QS and I was interested to see if there was a way that I could move into it as a career.
I spoke with my manager, who was so supportive and began working with me to find an appropriate conversion course. We decided that a Distance Learning path was most suitable. As I have two young children, it would minimise the time I would need to spend away from home over the course of my studies. Northumbria University in Newcastle, was a great fit for me. I enrolled in the Masters of Surveying (Quantity Surveying) course and STS have backed me in every way since I began. The company has provided financial and educational support and my manager has assigned me to work with a senior QS to develop my skills and experience. I will complete my studies in 2025 and look forward to a successful career with STS.
STS have a very understanding approach to family commitments, which is important to me as a parent with young children. It is this support that makes it possible for people like me to have ambition to further my career within STS.
My name is Deiric Hyland and I am just starting my 4th year as an electrical apprentice. I have been working for STS for over 3 years now and I can definitely say choosing to do my apprenticeship with STS was one of the better decisions I have made in my life.
Since starting with the company, I have completed my phase 2 and will be attending my phase 4 very soon. In phase 2 I found the practical exams very straight-forward. This was because my work with STS meant that I already had experience when it came to wiring sockets as well as doing containment which you will have to do in your P2 exam.
Working in the company has been really enjoyable. I have worked on many different sites and made a lot of friends. My confidence has grown over my apprenticeship due to the mentoring I received from my colleagues at STS. I remember in my first year, I did not understand many of the tasks in front of me. However, now I have the ability to explain these jobs and show some of the first year apprentices how to complete these tasks on a daily basis. I have acquired a variety of new skills and knowledge that I have expanded on over the years
