STS are extremely proud to have launched our own Mental Health Awareness programme, Mind Matters. The programme was developed earlier this year with a vision to promoting the positive mental health of each employee in the company.
From the outset, the company recognised that our mission would not be possible without expert assistance, and so the company partnered with mental health professionals at Pieta House and trained counsellors and occupational health experts at VHI Healthcare to create a customised employee assistance programme exclusively for STS employees. From the 1st of September 2017 all STS employees can now talk to an expert at any time, in complete confidence and free of charge. This service also extends out to employees partners/ family members over the age of 16. It covers a range of areas that can affect our mental health, such as Personal Crisis, Health and illness, Babies and Children, Managing Money and Work Issues. It also offers a special service to managers, supervisors and Health and Safety Officers who may be directly confronted with issues relating to mental health illnesses in the work place day to day.
The company held Mental Health Awareness Talks On the 12th and 13th of September this year, where we arranged for mental health practitioners to visit us around the country. Pieta House delivered presentations in Cork, Waterford and Dublin for all employees to attend Willie Murphy from the Employee Assistance Programme will be informing us about the service available to STS in full. Therapists talked to us about how to look after our mental health, our friends and our families in times of need. STS Management, Supervisors and Health and Safety Officers attended specially designed workshops to help them be more aware of mental health issues in the workplace and they were brought through the support services available to them personally and also how to respond when a team member is in distress.
Specialist Technical Services feel that we have instigated a very positive and beneficial health initiative in the company that benefits everybody now and into the future. We hope that other construction companies will follow our lead and promote mental health awareness campaigns in their own companies.
